Doctors Ponder Delicate Talks As Medicare Pays For End-Of-Life Counsel

She didn’t want to spend the rest of her days seeing doctors, the 91-year-old woman confessed to Dr. Kevin Newfield as he treated a deep wound on her arm.

“You don’t have to, but you have to tell me what you do want,” Newfield replied. “I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid of being 106,” she told the surgeon and her daughter, who was in the room with them. The woman’s spontaneous admission in Newfield’s south Florida office that January day triggered a 20-minute discussion about living wills, hospice and other end-of-life issues, Newfield said. Nike Expands Shoe Line For People With Special Needs

Nike is adding to its lineup of sneakers designed specifically for people with disabilities, with a fresh range of offerings for both kids and adults. The athletic-wear giant is introducing three new shoes that use its FLYEASE entry system, which relies on a wrap-around zipper to secure the shoe and features a larger opening to make it easier to slide feet in and out.
“Once zipped, FLYEASE provides performance-ready lockdown without the need for tying laces – perfect for athletes on the go and for those who may need a little extra assistance,” the company said in announcing the new products. Read more.

NBRC Independent Living Services Board Policy Approved

As new Board policies are developed to meet both legislative and NBRC-identified needs, these must be submitted to the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Per legislation expanding the use of Independent Living Services (ILS) to individuals who reside in their family home, NBRC’s ILS Board Policy has been approved by DDS. This important service seeks to give adults living in their family home opportunities to learn independent living skills so they can increase their ability to become more self-sufficient in adulthood. Families Work To Create Integrated Housing Model

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Last year, Kirby Wilkins published a book about his relationship with his son Jake who has been living with severe cerebral palsy since birth. But “Life with Jake: A Father’s Story” is missing a crucial chapter, the chapter yet to come.

Study Finds Merit In Classroom-Based Autism Therapy

Preschool teachers may be able to play a significant role in helping kids with autism improve their language and social skills, a new study suggests.

Using a play-based intervention called Joint Attention Symbolic Play Engagement and Regulation, or JASPER, teachers in several preschool classrooms for children with autism were able to integrate the behavior therapy directly into their students’ daily routines. Read more.
