Troubled Sonoma Developmental Center Loses Federal Funding

The California Department of Health announced Friday that it had issued a notice to terminate federal funding for the Sonoma Developmental Center, leaving the future of the beleaguered facility unclear. Sonoma Developmental Center Federal Funding Stripped

State health officials announced Friday that they are terminating federal funding for the Sonoma Developmental Center, citing ongoing issues with patient safety at the troubled facility.

In a news release, the state Department of Public Health stated it took the action because the center failed to comply with the conditions of participation for the federal Medicaid certification program. Read More.

UC Davis Professor gets Award to Develop Preventive Treatment for Autism

University of California Davis professor Judy Van de Water has received a Hartwell Foundation award to support research that could affect almost one in every four cases of autism among children in the country.
An autism researcher affiliated with the UC Davis MIND Institute, she is one of 11 scientists nationwide to receive an individual biomedical research award for innovative, early-stage research with the potential to benefit children.
In 2013, Van de Water discovered how unique antibodies in the bloodstream of some pregnant mothers target proteins critical to fetal brain development. Read more.

Dental Care Crisis

The last in a long line of Northern California hospitals abruptly announced last week it will discontinue dental surgery programs, igniting a scramble by community health leaders to solve what they termed yet another “dental care crisis” in Sacramento County.  Sutter Medical Center is just the latest health system to shut down its dental surgery program over concern for the bottom line.
