Tax Cocktails to Fund Developmental Services?

A bill introduced on Tuesday in the Second Extraordinary Legislative Session on Health wants to levy a 5-cent tax on cocktails served in restaurants and bars in California. CA Sued Over Care Delays for Mentally Ill, Disabled Defendants

On Wednesday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against California alleging that the state failed to transfer defendants with mental health issues or disabilities who were deemed incompetent to stand trial to state hospitals in a timely manner, Reuters reports (Bernstein, Reuters, 7/29).

California senators chosen to discuss funding for developmentally disabled

State senators who will serve on a special session to discuss additional funding for services for those with developmental disabilities have been chosen, but it’s uncertain when the committee will convene.

Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León has announced that Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina, Mike Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, and Holly Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, and 10 others will be part of the public health and developmental services committee.

California’s new budget included no extra funds for programs for those with developmental disabilities, but Gov. Jerry Brown called for a special session to discuss options on how the state could raise that money. Read more.

Troubled Sonoma Developmental Center Loses Federal Funding

The California Department of Health announced Friday that it had issued a notice to terminate federal funding for the Sonoma Developmental Center, leaving the future of the beleaguered facility unclear. The Department of Developmental Services, which runs the facility, has 90 days to appeal the decision. Read More.

Sonoma Developmental Center Federal Funding Stripped

State health officials announced Friday that they are terminating federal funding for the Sonoma Developmental Center, citing ongoing issues with patient safety at the troubled facility.

In a news release, the state Department of Public Health stated it took the action because the center failed to comply with the conditions of participation for the federal Medicaid certification program. Read More.

Developmental Center Task Force Reprised

California Health and Human Services Secretary Diana Dooley last week announced she is reconvening the task force for developmental centers.
That task force took on a formidable job — over the course of six months, it came up with a $13 million plan to restructure the state’s developmental centers — and in May presented its “Plan for the Future of Developmental Centers in California” to legislators in time for the state’s budget revision. 11th Annual Sonoma County Transition Fair

The 11th annual Transition Fair will be held on Tuesday, March 5th 2019 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, at the Finley Community Center, 2060 West College Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95401.

This free event is designed to help students and their families learn about services for individuals with special needs as they transition from school-based programs to adulthood. Sonoma County special education students in middle school, high school, and post-secondary programs and their families are invited to attend. Spanish interpreters will be available.
