Independent Living Services (ILS) is designed to provide instruction to adults on critical skills related to living as independently as possible in the community. The skills taught may include, but are not limited to: cooking, cleaning, shopping, menu planning, money management, mobility, use of community resources, and self-reliant behavior that an adult may need to be successful in this endeavor.
ILS is provided in a person’s own home or apartment, or within the individual’s family home per new legislation starting January 1, 2015:
“Regional centers shall provide independent living skills services to an adult consumer, consistent with his or her individual program plan, that provide the consumer with functional skills training that enables him or her to acquire or maintain skills to live independently in his or her own home, or to achieve greater independence while living in the home of a parent, family member, or other person.”
ILS is expected to result in the need for minimal ongoing support (maintenance) after formalized training has been completed.
