Mental Health Coverage and Federal Law

The Federal Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act requiring health plans to provide mental health benefits on par with medical benefits has been in place since 2008.
Final regulations go into effect this January, explicitly stating that health plans must pay for individuals with mental health conditions to receive medically necessary residential treatment as well as other forms of intermediate care, such intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization, in parity with other medical conditions
This is a game changer. Now, families who have a loved one with a serious mental health condition may consider intensive treatment and insurance will have to cover it. Read more.

Mental Health Services Act (MHSA)

North Bay Regional Center was awarded funding from the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) in partnership with the California Department of Mental Health and the Department of Developmental Services. Two separate programs were created with this funding:

  • Building Bridges: Meeting the Needs of Individuals Diagnosed with a Mental Health Condition and a Developmental Disability, is a 3 year contract that was launched with a conference event March 7 & 8, 2012. The focus is to improve community systems and supports through streamlined collaboration and coordination of services between the tri-county mental health and developmental disability programs.
